Colchester Games Hub Cohort 2016

Colchester Games Hub

Want to work in Games Design?

In partnership with Shark Infested Custard and the University of Essex, we are running the Colchester Games Hub; a programme for individuals who have an interest in making games and/or starting their own studio.

The programme, which takes place at our office within the University of Essex' Knowledge Gateway Centre, sees individuals working together as part of a team to plan and develop a game idea. Each team will have a structure covering the key pillars of development, including programming, design, art and production. Programme contributors from the gaming industry include Microsoft, Dlala Studios, Square Enix and Tower Studios.

Programme details:

Team roles: Identifying what each member will be doing and their responsibilities
Game ideas: Start discussion as to game/project options
Feasibility study: Each idea is written up in a proposal, covering the pros & cons
Finance: Managing finance - overview for new businesses
Design write-up: Chosen project is fleshed out into fully detailed design document
Store expectations: Experts from main stores to hold a presentation and Q&A session
Mechanics and implementation: Implementation of the games key mechanics
Legal: Understanding the legal structures and requirements
Prototype development: Each mechanic is developed to prove out
Testing: Completed games are tested by the team for bugs and balance
External reviews: Critical reviews by internal teams and mentors as well as external parties
Sales and marketing: Marketing experts to help teams develop their release strategy
Presentation to investors: Teams will deliver their marketing plan to the other teams and mentors

Students will spend the duration of the course taking either a chosen idea to prototype, or if the team already has a project started externally, a prototype through to demonstrable project. Teams will be expected to continually develop every aspect of their project outside of their time directly on the course.

Veteran developers will teach and mentor the teams throughout their projects' development. There will also be regular visits from other experienced experts.

Upon conclusion of the programme, which is fully funded and therefore free to applicants, the development teams will be able to show their game to invited media, investors and publishers with the aim of getting investment to take their game to market.

All students will need to bring along their own equipment, incl. PCs and Macs.
